5 ways to become more confident in your dating life

When it comes to dating, confidence is one of the sexiest traits a person can have. Keeping that confidence up is sometimes a struggle. Especially, after going on several dates where nothing panned out. It can do a number on your self-esteem.

Failed dates can result in some negative beliefs to crop up and often people start believing them. Don’t! Beliefs such as, “I’ll never find my soulmate.”, “Nobody is going to ever love me”, “I’m destined to be alone”, are soul destroying and confidence killers.

These beliefs are dangerous because they become embedded in our psychic and will translate in how we see yourselves, even in the way we present ourselves and that’s how we shut down new possibilities.

Be confident in projecting who you really are and believe that there is someone who wants you and who deserves you.

That’s why confidence is so very important. When you are confident in yourself and your ability to attract the right person for you, dating becomes more fun.

So, here are 5 scientific backed up ways to become more confident in your dating life.

1. Wear a colour that you love and makes you feel sexy

You must have heard by now that wearing the colour red can make you look more attractive and increase your sex appeal. In a study published in the European Journal of Social Psychology, found that wearing the colour red can influence how you feel about yourself. In this study, participants who wore red felt more “physically attractive and sexually receptive” than those who wore blue. The explanation is engrained in psychology. Since people typically associate red with passion and desire, those who wore red felt more attractive because they subconsciously “knew” they would be perceived as more attractive.

Simple, invest in a red dress or top or bring out that red dress or top hiding in your wardrobe and put it on. Be a confident and sexy person other people perceive you to be.

2. Wear perfume on your date

There’s nothing more seductive than catching that beautiful aroma from your date. When you smell good, you feel good and your body language will display confidence.

Perfume is confidence in a bottle. In a study published by journal Neurobiology of Sensation and Reward, 90% of women in a study reported feeling more confident when they wore perfume.

Put on your favourite perfume before you head out on a date because you’ll feel confident and your date will pick up on your vibes.

3. Listen to music as you get ready for your date

A study in 2014 in the Journal of Social Psychological and Personality Science found that listening to music can increase your confidence levels and make you feel well more ‘powerful’. What is interesting is that songs that were bass-heavy left participants feeling and acting more confident.

Play some tunes before your date and feel and act more confident as a result.

4. Strike a pose in front of your mirror before you go out

Sounds silly, but according to a study by social psychologist, Amy Cuddy, body language can shape your mind, fundamentally how you perceive yourself.

Participants, in the study, were asked to hold a ‘high-power pose’, which is more open and wider, while others were asked to do a ‘low-power pose’, which involved leaning in with legs crossed. Everyone was told to hold these poses for a couple of minutes.

Interesting to see is that high-power posers saw an increase in their testosterone levels and decrease in their cortisol levels. There you have it, holding a high-power pose for two minutes will help you focus on your strengths, which then leads to a boost in your confidence.

5. Think back to an occasion when you felt good about yourself

A study published in the Journal of Experimental Society Psychology found that ‘power-priming’ yourself before an important date or event can help you feel and act confident.

All you have to think about a time when you felt confident and really good about yourself before an important event. Think about that time when you felt powerful and bring back those feelings to the present. This is a useful strategy for first dates, job interviews or a presentation.

Try out some of these tips to build your confidence and keeping it up while making dating fun again.

IF you’ve ever wondered why you seem to be permanently single while others are always coupled up, it could be down to your DNA.

Scientists have discovered a “singleton gene” — and those who have it are 20 per cent more likely to not be in a relationship.

The study by researchers at Beijing University found that the gene lowers levels of serotonin, making people less comfortable with intimacy, the Daily Mail reported.

Our DNA can affect whether we marry and whether we divorce.

Scientists tested hair samples from almost 600 Chinese university students to look at the gene 5-HTA1.

They found that people with the “G” version were much more likely to be single, with 60 per cent of them not in a relationship, compared to 50 per cent of those with “C” version of the gene.

It was already known that people with the “G” allele find it more difficult to get close to others, are more neurotic and more prone to depression.

Now it appears that it could affect your ability to maintain a relationship, no matter how attractive you are to potential partners.

The gene that makes us prone to depression could also make us less likely to have success

The study concluded: “As pessimism and neuroticism are detrimental to the formation, quality and stability of relationships, this connection between the G allele and psychological disorders might decrease carriers’ dating opportunities or lead to romantic relationship failure.”

It is clear that more research is needed, with the experiment being a relatively small one and only involving students.

But scientists said it was “evidence for genetic contribution to social relationships in certain contexts”.

Other experts questioned the importance of genes, telling the Daily Mail that we can usually overcome the influence of our DNA to form lasting relationships.

But previous studies have shown that genes play a part in our likelihood of marrying and divorcing and the number of sexual partners we have.
