FEMALE celebs these days? They just can’t stop talking about (caring for) their vaginas.

This week, Beauty and the Beast actress Emma Watson revealed how she uses a $US40 product called Fur Oil on her pubic hair.

“It’s an amazing all-purpose product,” the 26-year-old told beauty website Into the Gloss. She uses it on her eyebrows — as well as her lady parts.

She’s certainly not the first star to open up about varying treatments designed to keep things shipshape down there.

Here are five other examples:

ALL ABOUT THE LASERS

Kourtney Kardashian may have joked on Conan in December 2010 that she uses mayonnaise to shine up her genitals, but the reality-TV family has been deadly serious about their enthusiasm for ThermiVa. For the uninitiated, it’s a wand that dermatologists insert into the vaginal canal to heat tissue, stimulate collagen and revitalise the area. “My sisters, they’ve had kids, and there’s a vaginal lasering thing to tighten it,” Khloe Kardashian said on her show, Kocktails with Khloe, in August last year. “So in my household, all they do is talk about this vagina laser.”

SUNBATHE YOUR HOO-HA

No genitalia subject is taboo for Big Little Lies actress Shailene Woodley, who shared advice with Into the Gloss. “Another thing I like to do is give my vagina a little vitamin D,” she explained in March 2014. “If you live in a place that has heavy winters, when the sun finally comes out, spread your legs and get some sunshine.”

STEAM IS THE ANSWER

Gwyneth Paltrow has long been a fan of vaginal steaming. Goop, the wellness website of everyone’s favourite blonde goddess, advocated for the cleansing practice of an herbal “mugwort v-steam” in January 2015, but gynaecologists were less convinced about its effectiveness.

Still, a year later, Paltrow spoke to website the Cut and sang the praises of the steaming technique, citing its “real healing properties”. She admitted that she was sceptical at first. “The first time I tried v-steaming, I was like: ‘This is insane.’ My friend Ben brought me, and I was like: ‘You are out of your fu**ing mind. What is this?’ But then, by the end of it, I was like: ‘This is so great.’”

Meanwhile, an early, lesser-known adopter of the v-steam was reality-show star Tamera Mowry, who first indulged her lady bits in 2013, sitting on a toilet-like contraption that blasted hot steam, mugwort tea and wormwood into her vagina. It’s apparently an old Korean tradition.

LOTIONS AND POTIONS

Lauren “Lo” Bosworth hasn’t done much on TV since her heady days in twin reality series Laguna Beach and The Hills, but she gets props for her entrepreneurship. Last year, the beach blonde launched her own line of feminine hygiene products to tackle “tricky infections and irritations” down below. “This is something that was created out of necessity for myself and my friends, women that I know,” Bosworth said about her Love Wellness brand. The lotions and potions range from pH-balancing Do It All Wipes to Good Girl Probiotics pills. “There’s no reason why you should have 15 products for your face and zero products for your vagina,” she told the Cut.

EGGSTRAVAGANZA

As we’ve heard, mum-of-two Paltrow can always be relied upon to put women in touch with their inner, er, innards. Her Goop site went bananas over so-called “jade” or “yoni” eggs, which — when inserted into people’s vaginas — are meant to strengthen pelvic floor muscles and improve their sex lives. Doctors, meanwhile, were about as happy about the concept as they were about the v-steam.

COSMETIC procedures that reduce lines and wrinkles on your face are so last year.

Women desperate to slow down the ageing process are now splashing out more than $3000 on jabs that claim to make their vaginas look more youthful.

Dubbed “labia puffing”, the non-surgical treatment involves injecting their own fat or dermal fillers into the labia majora to boost volume, add elasticity and remove creases.

The procedure takes 30 minutes and apparently the recovery time is minimal.

Jennifer Walden, a beauty plastic surgeon, says the vagina “loses volume and fullness with age as well as laxity of the skin”.

She told Daily Star Online: “Plumping the labia majora gives it a more youthful appearance”.

“The benefit of labia puffing is that it uses you own fat from another area of your body to add volume back to an area that deflates with time.

“This makes it look great as it immediately refills it to an appearance similar to what it may have looked like prior to child-bearing and/or menopause.”

Women can choose to use their own fat for the treatment — which will be sucked out of their abdomen or inner thigh via liposuction — or fillers.

The fillers contain hyaluronic acid, a moisture-boosting chemical found naturally in the deep layers of the skin, which is already used in many facial fillers.

Dr Walden said fat has a “softer, more natural appearance” and lasts longer, but some people prefer fillers because the material is “available off the shelf”.

She added that the process is “similar to getting areas on your face” injected with Botox.

Dr Walden said some of her patients have seen a boost in their sex drive following the treatment as they “feel more confident” about their privates.

Statistics from Transform Cosmetic Surgery showed a 45 per cent increase in the numbers of women inquiring about surgical procedures since 2010.

The average age of patients has dropped from 35 to 28, with more women now choosing to have surgery for aesthetic rather than medical reasons.

However, it’s worth pointing out that the labia plumps up when a woman is aroused, thanks to the rush of blood supply to the area.

THE G-spot was unleashed upon the world more than three decades ago, when Beverly Whipple announced on US television that by pressing a particular spot in the vagina, women would get orgasms.

Since then we’ve hunted for the G-spot in bedrooms and laboratories. But enough of us came up empty-handed that it raised the question: Does the G-spot exist?

To find out, the Science Vs podcast visited Beverly Whipple, now a professor of nursing at Rutgers University, at her home in New Jersey.

Whipple told us that she found this magical spot while studying women who thought they were peeing during orgasms.

To study the women, Whipple’s team inserted their fingers into patient’s vaginas to feel around for sensitive areas. “You go all around the vaginal wall,” says Whipple — from 12 o’clock, to 3 o’clock, to 6 o’clock and so on — ‘saying how does this feel? How does this feel?’

“Between 11 and 1 o’clock”, at the front wall of the vagina, we got a lot of smiles.”

She scoured the literature and found one article that described what she’d seen, an that was published in an obscure journal in 1950 by Dr. Ernst Grafenberg.

And so, Whipple named the spot, the Grafenberg Spot, after Dr Ernst Grafenberg. It soon got shortened to the G-spot.

In 1982, she published her first book called, The G Spot and other discoveries of human sexuality. And from there she was invited by television network after television network, to tell the world about the G-spot.

Amid all the fame, a scientific question lingered: What, exactly, is the G-spot?

Helen O’Connell, now a professor of urology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, has dissected around 50 vaginas throughout her career and studied many more alive vaginas. She says her work “did not seem to show anything in the vaginal wall that would be a direct anatomical structure leading to that experience.” That is, nothing special in the vagina, where the G-spot should be.

Other scientists looking for the G-spot, haven’t had much luck either. One review of many studies on the G-spot published in 2001, called it “a sort of gynaecological UFO: much searched for, much discussed, but unverified by objective means.” A decade later, another review of the work looking at dozens of trials concluded that the studies “still fail to provide irrefutable evidence for the G-spot’s existence”.

Looking at Whipple’s original research, it’s far from irrefutable. One of her first studies into this, published in 1981, was on just one woman. A second study of 47 women found that they all had a sensitive spot but pressing it in the lab did not produce orgasms, for any of them. In her book she described 400 woman who had this spot but this sample was never published in a peer- reviewed journal. A later experiment in 1983 tested 11 women and found a spot in only four of them.

Still, pressing something in the vagina is making at least some women smile. What is it?

The consensus that O’Connell and other researchers have arrived at is that what Whipple had identified as the G-spot, isn’t a spot at all. It’s probably the clitoris, working with parts around it, like the urethra and vagina. But the clitoris is a much larger and more complicated organ than many people think. That bit that you can touch, is literally the clit of the iceberg.

In 1998, O’Connell published research showing that the clitoris has two arms that extend down, called the bulbs, and two legs that go back for up to 9 centimetres, called the crura.

Helen also discovered that clitoris, shares some of the same blood and nerve supply with the urethra and the walls of the vagina share. And later preliminary work, suggest that during sex the clitoris, urethra and vagina may push, prod and excite each other, kind of like puppies in a basket. So interconnected are all these parts that O’Connell, and others, now argue that they should get their own name. But, spot is out.

Complex is the new word. This area that women are pressing to get orgasms is now called the Clitoral, Urethral Vaginal Complex, or CUV Complex.

As catchy as the CUV Complex, O’Connell says that we should start using this anatomically correct term, because using the term “the G-spot”, makes it sound like all you have to do is find a spot, press it and whammo, multiple orgasms!

“That somehow if you touch it enough or thrust it harder, that somehow magic is going to occur. Well that’s just a really bad paradigm,” she says.

This infatuation with “finding the G-spot”, is something that Whipple regrets unleashing. “I guess we’ve misled people, because it’s more than one little spot, it’s a whole area,” she says.

In fact, Whipple always advocated for focusing on the fun stuff around sex, rather than hunting for magical spots. “Sometimes holding hands, or touching, whatever it is that feels good to you, is an end in itself,” she says.

LET’S be honest, vaginas and lasers aren’t concepts you would think go hand-in-hand.

Think again.

Vaginal rejuvenation – a cosmetic vaginal tightening surgery procedure – is now a blooming business in Australia.

The popular procedure successfully treats three common issues woman may encounter during their lifetime: laxity of the vagina, urinary incontinence and dryness of the vagina. Although these symptoms are extremely common, they are notably under-reported by women.

Age, pregnancy and childbirth, certain illnesses, skin conditions and medication are all contributing factors that can lead to these issues. Thankfully vaginal rejuvenation has undergone significant technological advancements over the past few years, allowing these problems to be treated.

Laser (Juliet) and radio frequency (thermiVa) treatments for vaginal rejuvenation are two of the latest technological advancements. Enrich Clinic in Melbourne is the first in Australia to offer both as a combined treatment package for increased effectiveness and results.

“There is now more discussion and awareness of the unpleasant and uncomfortable symptoms women can suffer and more inclination to seek treatment to improve these symptoms” Dr Sandy Fieldhouse from Enrich Clinic told news.com.au.

Up to 55 per cent of premenopausal women and up to 80 per cent of post-menopausal women describe some degree of urinary incontinence, with dryness in the vagina effecting up to 40 per cent of postmenopausal women.

Studies have shown that treating urinary incontinence and vaginal relaxation effects on women, drastically improves their sense of well-being.

“The Enrich Intimate Program is designed to tighten the vagina and urinary canals and improve urinary continence, vaginal laxity and moistens the lining of the vagina, improving concerns of dryness,” Dr Fieldhouse states.

While this all sounds quite daunting, it’s a quick walk-in-walk-out procedure, taking approximately 30-45 minutes.

“The internal treatment is comparable to having a PAP smear and is typically very well tolerated. Local anaesthetic is used for the external areas to decrease discomfort and treatment here is often described as similar to laser hair removal” says Dr Fieldhouse.

Normal activities can be resumed immediately after and side effects are rare.

The external genital area can also be targeted in treatment, with tightening achieved here as well. The surgical vaginal rejuvenation procedures available at ENRICH are Labiaplasty, Clitoral Hood Reduction and Hymenoplasty (Hymen repair).

When thinking about vaginal rejuvenation, the term “designer vagina” often comes to mind, but that’s not the focus at Enrich.

“There is absolutely no ideal vagina. All are unique in shape, size and other commonly experienced variables. The Intimate Program is not about creating a more ‘ideal’ vagina, but is focused on addressing common, debilitating symptoms that women may previously have been embarrassed or reluctant to admit suffering from,” Dr Fieldhouse said.

A common question asked is ‘Does vaginal rejuvenation improve your sex life?’ The answer is yes.

“Women and their partners often report improved sexual satisfaction after undergoing the Intimate Program because of a combined effect of tightening and enhanced lubrication. Some women also describe stronger, prolonged orgasms. Women also report more confidence and less pain, further enhancing the sexual experience”.

An increasing number of Australian teenage girls have “genital anatomy anxiety” and are requesting genital cosmetic surgery to alter “normal” body parts, according to alarming new research.

The survey of 443 Australian GPs found a third have seen patients aged below 18 wanting to trim or shape their genitalia. Almost all the doctors surveyed said they had seen women of all ages express concerns about the appearance of their genitalia.

“The GPs surveyed said a large proportion of women have some degree of genital anatomy anxiety,” said head researcher Dr Magdalena Simonis, a fellow at The Royal College of General Practitioners, who revealed the survey’s preliminary findings.

The reasons for this anxiety included a “perception of normality based on images seen online”, particularly those in porn.

According to more than half the GPs surveyed, women who request genital surgery may have a range of mental health issues, including anxiety, body dysmorphic disorder, depression or eating disorders.

GPs, plastic surgeons and gynaecologists have echoed the findings and say many women have a warped understanding of what is a “normal-looking” vagina, due to the rise of internet porn and photoshopped images of genitalia, and because more women are removing their pubic hair.

Between 2000 and 2011, Medicare claims for vulvoplasty and labiaplasty grew from 640 annually to 1565 per year, according to a Women’s Health Victoria report. Labiaplasty, often marketed as “vaginal rejuvenation”, involves removing excess folds of skin surrounding the vulva.

The US and UK have seen similar increases. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery says that 400 girls 18 and younger had labiaplasty last year, an 80 per cent increase from the 222 girls who had cosmetic genital surgery in 2014. A 2013 British report found the number of labial reductions on girls and women done by the UK National Health Service had increased fivefold over 10 years.

Dr Laith Barnouti from Australia Plastic Surgery, a Sydney clinic where labiaplasty and other “vaginal rejuvenation” procedures are regularly performed, says his practice has seen a 5-10 per cent increase in requests for genital surgery since January 2015. Most of his patients are aged between 15 and 30.

Dr Barnouti says only fully-qualified plastic surgeons, not cosmetic surgeons, should perform the procedure.

“We will not do this on someone with a normal labia, only those with very prominent labia. Many of these women are embarrassed about it and they avoid intimate situations.”

He said women who have the procedure performed by an unqualified surgeon risk permanent damage.

“We see people who have too much tissue removed and we need to do a reconstructive labiaplasty. Some of the doctors don’t understand the function of the labia. If you cut the labia flush with the skin, then the opening of the vagina will dry up and you can get ulcers,” he said.

Women are becoming increasingly insecure about how their genitalia look, says the president of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Professor Steve Robson.

“With the fad of removing a lot of pubic hair, women and their partners can see the labia in more detail,” he said. “Lots of women don’t think they’re normal because they compare themselves to unrealistic models.”

The best way to improve the problem is to reassure women that there is a wide variation in the way things look.

“If your genitalia look and function normally, you do not require an operation,” said Prof Robson, who only performs “one or two” of these operations a year.

“I would do a labiaplasty if there was really a great degree of asymmetry, or someone had big labia which become inflamed when they ride a bike or do other forms of exercise.

“Often women just want to please their partners. I’ve said to them: The problem is with your partner, not your vagina’.”

Dr Simonis’ preliminary findings come as the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists issued guidelines to doctors last week to assist women who want to have genital surgery, The New York Times reported.

The college urged doctors to reassure these patients and suggest non-surgical alternatives that may alleviate discomfort and screen them for a psychiatric disorder that causes obsession about perceived physical defects.

Last July, the Royal College of General Practitioners issued guidelines for doctors on treating patients who request genital surgery, including recommending that they be directed to images of female genitalia that have not been digitally altered.

Women pay strangers to stroke their vaginas in new sex craze. Women are paying strangers to touch their vaginas in a bid to improve their sex lives and achieve better orgasms.

Orgasmic meditation (OM) practitioners are holding group masturbation classes to teach women how to climax, promising that the lessons can lead to a “larger state of consciousness, improving intimacy in relationships and generally increasing your orgasm skills”.

During a typical orgasmic meditation class, the woman undresses from the waist down while a total stranger strokes her clitoris for 15 minutes.

But before the fully-clothed stroker starts to massage their partner’s downstairs with the help of organic lube, they describe the vagina they are looking at, going into detail about the colour, texture and shape.

OM participants do the stroking in front of other group members in what’s called a “nest”.

While the session might sound rather sexual there’s apparently “no goal other than to feel, connect and be present”.

It may sound like a bizarre and seedy sex cult, but it’s popularity has been snowballing since it was founded in 2001.

There’s over 10,000 practitioners worldwide and 2,000 already in the UK, attracting a mixed clientele – anything from couples in their early 20s to people in their 80s.

In a world where everything, including our body image, has been streamlined, reshaped and redefined by mass media, physical dissatisfaction is growing. Not only are we concerned about our beer guts and bingo wings, we’re worrying about the holiest of holies… our genitals!

Pornography, light and hard has played a major part in muddying the norms and painting an often unrealistic standard in which all penises are 9 inches long and all vaginas are shaved, neat and symmetrical.

The reality isn’t quite so standardized, a fact that 101 Vagina project creator, Philip Werner hopes to makes better known.

Through the creation of his 101 Vagina project, Werner has helped bring down some of the stereotypes and educate both men and women on the beauty and diversity of the female form.

We took some time to chat with Werner about 101 Vagina, and more…

RHP – Can you describe your background and how you came to the medium of nude photography.

Werner – I have been interested in nude photography since I first saw nude photos; I kind of assume most people are. However, for the longest time I always felt ashamed of this interest, feeling that it was dirty and made me a bad person.

It wasn’t until I was invited by a lover to take photos of her that I finally felt I had the permission I needed to take the first tentative steps. She was a photographer herself and had already done some nudes previously. She loved my appreciation of her and I loved the permission to appreciate her.

Since that realisation, that some women love it too, I went on a long journey healing my own feelings of shame and guilt. For me, nude photography has always had a healing element, for both myself and the friends whom I’ve photographed. I wrote a blog piece about the process of getting over shame through nude photography here.

Regarding the 101 Vagina book, I was initially inspired by Eve Ensler’s Vagina Monologues, which really brought home to me how debilitating the taboo is on various levels. Greg Taylor’s exhibition, simply called Cunts, was another inspiration. I wanted to do something to help ease the taboo and I had the idea of combining the visual element with a message. Being a photographer this book was how I felt I could, and wanted to, contribute.

What would you like to achieve with 101 Vagina?

Really it’s about breaking down the taboo and shame. I want people to feel comfortable with their bodies and their sexuality. I believe that the suppression and repression around our sexuality causes problems that we’re not fully aware of, including being causally related to sexual abuse. For this reason I think the removal of this taboo is actually very important.

How did you go about securing the models?

Initially I simply started shooting friends whom I told about it and who were interested in participating, but shooting 101 would have taken too long this way. So I built the website and made a Facebook page and invited every woman I knew in Melbourne. From this the word spread and then women started coming forward that I had no prior connection to.

There are short stories that accompany each picture in the series, is that right?

Yes, I asked each woman to write a “message from or about her vagina to the world.” Each photo is accompanied by this message. It is these messages which really give the book it’s depth. They span the entire spectrum of emotions and themes related to vaginas. From pleasure and joy to abuse and pain. Some are light and others deep. But they are all very real and candid. Many are very touching and come are also quite confronting. The story of a woman who wanted to cut her own labia off with scissors when she was a teenager stands out, but there are so many other powerful messages.

The project is comprised of various elements, the book, the calendar, the exhibition, can you tell us a little about each.

The book was always the main vision, that is what I was working towards, and it was even clear in my mind how I wanted it to look right from the start. So it was incredibly satisfying, after over two years, when I printed the first draft on my laser printer at home and saw my vision manifest physically. However, long before then I had already built the website and started publishing vagina stories that women were sharing with me.

The vagina stories part of the websites blog is still going and people can still send their stories in to me for publication. The calendar was then more of a fun addition, but it also means people have something they can buy if they don’t feel they can afford the book.

The exhibition was really the last thing to come along. For the launch I wanted to show what I had been doing, and in a way that lots of people could partake in and get the message of vagina love and self acceptance, and an exhibition was the most obvious way of doing this. In a way the exhibition detracts from the book, since many people don’t even realise that the book is what it’s all about, but I’m still happy that they get to engage with the work and get benefit out of it.

What has the public’s reaction to the project been like?

People’s reaction has been overwhelmingly positive and supportive. Only a handful of people have been critical, and then also only people who hadn’t even seen the book or viewed the exhibition. I have not come across a single person who has engaged with the project who has not appreciated it. So many people are deeply grateful and moved by it. There is a real reverence with which people stand and absorb the photos and stories. It’s fascinating to behold.

101 Vagina has already taken part in Festivals such as the Melbourne and Sydney Fringe, where would you like to take it in future?

I want to take it on the Ellen show !!! Anyone have a direct line to her? I want this book and it’s message to get out as far and wide as possible so that it can open as many people’s minds as possible. I would love to take it to the US and Europe, but it’s incredibly expensive to do all this. I’m heavily in dept from this project, despite the crowdfunding campaign (my parents contributed more than half) and the few books that are selling. I would need to sell 1000 books or more for it to break even.

You have some other 101 projects in the pipeline, can you tell us a little about these.

101 Penis! This was one of the most common questions when I was doing 101 Vagina, “Are you doing penises next?” So, yes, I am. The website is already up though there is not much on it yet. I have already taken 13 photos and will hopefully have time to keep shooting some more after the Melbourne Fringe exhibition. I’m also intending to do 101 Breasts.

For now, get to Melbourne Fringe exhibition in Melbourne:
