Let’s start with our own popular sex event- Sexpo, an event that happens in different sates at different times of the year. Despite the catchy name, Sexpo (The Sexuality and Adult Lifestyle Exhibition) is pretty much sex fest light; the event features amateur strip tease, professional pole dancing, and naughty hypnotists, as well as some of the biggest adult film stars in the biz. Hundreds of exhibitors peddle the latest and greatest in kinky toys.

10. Shinto Kanamara Matsuri (The Festival of the Steel Phallus)

While this spring event started in 1977, it is said to be based on legends told during the 17^th century. A sharp-toothed demon fell in love with a beautiful woman but was rebuffed, thus he took out his gory revenge on the anatomy of her lovers until clever blacksmith broke the demon’s teeth with a steel phallus. 11. German Fetish Ball Weekend

Dubbed the biggest  and most controversial event in the swinging calendar, is a three day where anything goes. Lifestylers take part of various forms of sex, group, orgies, kink and anything that turns them on.

The festival has taken place annually since 2013, and has previously been held in Gloucestershire and Worcestershire. This year’s was the first in Wales.

RHP – So, Madison, are you looking forward to Sexpo?

Madison Missina – My Partner will attest to the fact that I live for SEXPOs, in fact I have 2 seasons, pre Sexpo and post Sexpo. So with less than a month till Melbourne SEXPO I’m beyond excited. There’s a lot of preparation to go but it’s amazing being able create awesome things for people to enjoy.

What’s your first Sexpo memory?

Gosh it’s so long ago, probably 10 years ago in fact. My first SEXPO was when I was doing my internship for sex therapy I was there working for Impotence Australia and I remember being in awe. There was so much to take in, and I remember being so jealous of all the dancers who were getting around in sexy costumes. Compared to me in my serious sex therapy clothes I just wanted to find a way to do both, talk to people about sexuality and express myself at the same. If only I had a crystal ball back then, my younger me would be in heaven now..

What will you be doing at Melbourne Sexpo this year?

Melbourne SEXPO will be my debut as SEXPO’s official tour guide, which I’m so excited about. I’ve practically become part of SEXPO’s furniture now so I’m looking forward to sharing everything that I love about SEXPO with everyone.

After amazing feedback from Sydney SEXPO my latest work RAW: Female Sexual Pleasure which is an educational photography exhibit and the sister seminar RAW: Female Sexual Self Esteem will be returning.

But possibly the most exciting will be the Live O which is a combination of art and female sexuality which will be on the SEXPO main stage.

Do you like getting these opportunities to meet your fans?

I live the life of my dreams now because of my fans. So I love every opportunity where I can interact with them. That’s why I put so much effort into SEXPOs I really see it as my chance to give back and make my fans feel special. So I’m always coming up with new things to do.

Tell us a bit more about your project, RAW… sounds like an interesting concept.

What I’ve noticed since the female sexual liberation of the 70s is that we now seem to live in a society where we see hyper female sexuality, which is also censored. Due to censorship laws, the labia are often photoshoped, the beautiful fake orgasm is almost everywhere, and certain parts of female sexuality are considered fetish. The impact of this is that cosmetic surgery is rising, women are reporting pressure to perform like pornstars, to rise to the beauty ideal, get the perfect body, have it all and all this detracts from being able to have great sex but also great relationships. So I wanted to provoke everyone to start a conversation about this. RAW is an unedited, unfiltered look into the diversity and ferociousness of female sexual arousal and pleasure. The seminars are looking into how we’ve ended up with all these mixed messages and aims to empower women to embrace their own particular womanhood, whatever that may be.

Let’s drill a little deeper in your credential list, you’re also a sex therapist! Tell us about how you got into that.

Really I just chased what I loved. I’m an eternal student, I devour books, I love to study society, and I collect qualifications like some people collect handbags. So when I had the option to specialize my social science degree I just picked what fascinated me and I got hooked on sexology. Human sexuality is so fundamental to everything in our lives – it’s more than our orientation or what we like in bed; it also covers our attitudes to gender expression, to gender roles to how we approach relationships. Above safety, food and shelter what we all strive for is belonging so our sexual self-esteem is the basis for our connectedness. Especially these days living in a society where sex and messages about sex are literally everywhere and it seems that society is using sexuality as a way to both polarize and unite people it’s a very delicious time to be sexologist.

Have your studies helped your own sex life?

Immensely. When I was about 14 I realized that I was probably a lesbian, yet I also knew I wanted to join the sex industry which would involve me having sex with men and I’ve always been ultra feminine. At that time there weren’t many femme lesbian role models, so being very confused I decided to be straight, which meant that I did not understand sex at all. It was my darkest secret for so long, here I was, a decade later a professional sex worker who did not experience sex as sexual. It was through studying gender and sexuality that I began to start to grasp how I could use my body sexually and begin to understand and be okay with my sexuality in contrast to my career. So I studied female sexual pleasure and arousal thoroughly. I literally had to learn how to manipulate my body to experience sexual arousal with men. Let me just say that vaginas are awesome, they are capable of so much and it always surprises me that this information is so hard to find. So through my academic studies – and then later in my career where I did more body work skills based courses – I went from someone who couldn’t even comprehend that penetrative sex could ever be pleasurable, to a woman who has consistent frequent penetrative orgasms with whoever knows the right techniques. I became empowered enough to realise that my pleasure is important and unique, and educating my partners on how I work is all part of the fun. My studies taught me that sexual arousal and pleasure don’t need to stem from attraction and being able to have good sex with a male partner doesn’t mean that I’m also not a lesbian. I’ve had to break every mold to find me, so I don’t know who I would see myself as if it wasn’t for my studies.

You are of course well known for your work on film, so let’s tackle a few questions about your time on the set…

Favourite scene partner?

I don’t really have a favourite. Highlights to me were Lexi Belle because, well, she’s Lexi! It was actually the only porn scene of mine that I’ve watched back. But I also love working with Zahra Stardust – she’s totally hot and being bisexual it meant that our scene was more authentic. And Monte Cooper’s spanking scene with me changed my life.

Funniest moment while filming?

I was filming a glory hole scene where my head was padlocked into a wall. The producer had made this wooded collar type contraption which would pose as the lock to make it look like I couldn’t escape. But the problem was that it was quite heavy on my neck. So just before we started shooting he added some screws just hold it in place on the wall, thinking that we could just undo the bottom section and I could be easily released. We filmed the scene, I had my most powerful onscreen orgasm, and then the power went out. In total darkness we discovered that he put the screws in the wrong place so rather than just support the collar he had actually built my head into the wall. We had to break the wall to get me out. I wasn’t hurt but I often think that would have been hilarious if it got to the point of us needing to call for help.

Craziest/trickiest location and or position?

I once was away shooting on location at a farm. This involved lots of sex outdoors in paddocks. The scenes look beautiful. But in real life, sex on tree stumps in paddocks with cows, meant that we had to be very technical with the placement of props to prevent splinters and it seemed that everywhere there was cow dung. But my scene partner Rob Paulson was an absolute gentlemen and made that shoot awesome.

The sexiest thing you’ve ever seen on a porn set.

The sexiest thing that I’ve experienced on a porn set was when Monte Cooper gave me a spanking session. Monte made spanking so sensual it was amazing. The way Monte introduced the spanking doing the proper warm up and build up I was in heaven, even the pain was this pleasurable high. It’s the one scene that I wish never ended! I’d really like to see Monte start to teach spanking – when you have a skill like that you simply must share it with the world!

So, how about your dating life, how does that work?

It’s a little different; I find that I have to be more wary of people who see me as a trophy of some sort. I’ve dated a lot of people who have wanted to ride my coat tails of sort – that are more enamored with Madison than they are with Milly. So I’ve had more than my fair share of short-term romances that have gone nowhere. But I’ve learnt to just take things slower and listen to my gut. Being a sex worker – a pornstar – means that my partners have to really question what monogamy and relationship boundaries really mean. Being a sexologist and being so experienced in sex also means that my partners are often intimidated thinking that they need to live up to high sexual ideals, which is of course not true. You don’t actually need to be a sexual expert to have great sex, that’s a myth. So my relationships take more work than others.

Have you ever met anyone online?

Absolutely – in fact I met my current partner online. But funny story: in the past when I’ve attempted online dating I’ve had to do it in really quick bursts because my profile has a tendency to get reported for impersonating a public persona. It’s the most frustrating thing. Don’t dating sites know public personas need love and companionship too?

Can you give us your top tips for digital dating?

The most important tip I believe is to know that meeting new people and dating can be some of the most fun times of your life. Especially the bad dates, you will probably find that you will want to tell those stories the rest of your life. So have fun and see the whole process as an adventure. Take the pressure off, aim to just meet new awesome people and see what develops.

Keep your bios short but try to show – not tell – people about you. So if you have a great sense of humour put some comedy in it. I remember seeing one profile on a site where everyone added that their ideal first meeting would be to go out for sushi. This person wrote “Well I don’t like sushi, so could we perhaps just meet for coffee? Or maybe literally anything that doesn’t involve raw fish (I’m not in, I know).” This really stayed with me. It was personal, it was funny and it showed that that person was down to earth enough to laugh at themselves.

Put effort into your photos, it’s the first thing that people will see. So make them current and relevant. Include photos that show you doing something interesting or one of your hobbies as that’s a really great icebreaker.

Physical attraction is an important thing, but it’s also something that can grow if that person is awesome or diminish if well they’re not so awesome. Plus with the advent of filters people don’t always look like their own photos. So don’t judge possible matches too much on looks.

When starting up conversations rather than the usual “Tell me about you?” Ask specific questions such as “What did you get up to this weekend?” Whilst many people can seemingly speak about themselves for hours very open-ended questions can be really hard to answer. So keep specific and treat it like a conversation.

Sexpo director David Ross came up with the idea for an adult event that mingled sex and entertainment back in 1995, and he promises that this year’s Sexpo is brand spanking new.

And apart from the obvious universal appeal of the Fake an Orgasm and Amateur Strip events, there’s a chance to see how good UK reality TV star James Tindale looks in real life – as well as his Geordie Shore co-star Sophie Kasaei. The pair are heading to Brisbane for Sexpo, giving the public a chance to get a photo and meet the sexually charged twosome in person.

Adult store merchandise will be on exhibit and for sale, and you can pick up showbags – if you can’t decide what to get, there’s a mystery bag. There’s fetish clothing and footwear and a hair and make-up station where punters can glam up.

“We’ve got a $150,000 stage and then we spend another fifty grand on talent going on the stage, that’s everything from Bad Boys Australia to female troupes and audience participation,” Ross says.

“The amateur strip show on Friday and Saturday night is something no one should miss. It’s rare that we don’t get half a dozen males and females up, usually more, and it’s a site to behold. The audience love it and for the people it’s their five minutes of glory because they’ve got an audience of up to 4,000 and they’re on a fantastic stage.” Ross says there’s a form to enter the strip show on the website, but admits many people make a spur of the moment decision to Magic Mike it.

The Shafter is a giant penis you can get inside for – ahem – a ride. “It used to be a fairground rocket,” Ross says. “People come out laughing; and I have heard that people get a bit amorous in there as well – it’s all dark!” After that, there’s the Fake an Orgasm event: “Couples get up on stage, all kinds of couples and sexualities – friends, lovers – and they’re encouraged to fake an orgasm. People have an absolute laugh.”

Brisbane’s reputation for being a tad prudish means up until now there’s been no nudity on stage. “However, we have negotiated, and this is the first time in Brisbane’s history that we’re allowed full nudity on stage,” Ross reveals. The event is governed by an adult entertainment license, with strict controls on who can enter, so leave the kids at home.

“It’s great to walk into a room and look around at 4,000 people and think, well I’m not the only one who is interested in finding out about my sexuality,” Ross says. “You see people of all ages and persuasions; I’ve seen Muslims walking around with headwear on, and older people – it’s a melting pot of all kinds, and it’s a bit of fun.

Sexpo may change someone’s life this year: the compère search could offer a great start to anyone who thinks they have the gift of the gab. “We’re looking for submissions from people who have some experience in emceeing and compèring, and we’ll have our professionals to walk them through,” Ross says. “We’ll fly these people to our Melbourne show later in the year and the winner will be the major compère in the Brisbane show next year.”

(RHP) So Fai, tell us, how does one become a “Sexpert”

(Fai Kur) Well I think that in some small way we are all sexperts! (laughs)

However for me I specialized in sexual health by completing a Master of Health Science (Sexual Health) through The University of Sydney.

Additionally, I think my own history of having worked both as a sexual therapist (through my private practice “Sexual Focus”) and having worked in the sex toy industry for many years was a perfect fit for my role at Sexpo.

And how did you get involved with Sexpo initially?

Rob Godwin from Sexpo contacted me one day discussing the possibility of us creating a number of workshops for Sexpo Sydney and Melbourne 2010. My excitement was insane and then I received a second phone call from Rob during which he asked me if we could organise something for Sexpo Adelaide which was happening in three weeks time.

What is awesome, and I don’t even know if Rob knows this, but I decided to become a sex therapist when I attended Sexpo in Perth over 12 years ago. Little did I know that I would then go to uni for ten years and become the sex therapist for Sexpo Australia – it is very awesome!

So describe your workshops at the RedHotPie.com.au Sex Sessions stand.

Ahhh, brilliant question, I will admit they are kind of full on in the best possible way! I want, actually I need people, especially females to know that what we have been taught about our sexual anatomy is minuscule compared to the rich internal and extremely pleasurable landscape that exists within us all.

Knowing this and how the body experiences pleasure and orgasm can help all of us increase our sexual and orgasmic bliss. This knowledge is empowering and necessary for every man and woman to know.

These are a fantastic snippet of our 3 hour “I Am Woman” workshops that we run in Perth. We also run a few fun workshops where we share with you our expert knowledge of sex toys. We teach people how to choose the best toy for them.

What are people getting out of your workshops?

The list is endless. They get the opportunity to listen to a presentation that they would almost never get to experience anywhere else in the world.

Additionally they get me. I stay behind and have individual conversations / therapy sessions for those who have burning questions or some personal concerns.

In truth I think we can be hysterical at the end of the day. Sexpo is so much fun and the high and buzz just gets better and more intense as the day and night progresses, so by the time we get to 10pm we can be pretty hysterical.

What are you most looking forward to in regard to Melbourne Sexpo?

The opportunity to talk to as many people as possible; to share with them our knowledge about toys not only how to choose them but also how to use them. And all things relating to sex and sexual health.

What’s your number one, general sex tip for people?

Oh my god, only one? This is sex we are talking about – I need an entire week! Well, in regards to products: use an amazing silicone based lubricant for everything especially for hand jobs and with toys. And in regards to getting down and dirty, just relaxing during sex is crap – females need to engage their pelvic floor muscles and peripheral muscles to intensify their experience of orgasm and to learn the difference between the different types of orgasms. Ok and one more – engage in your erotic mind!

What’ the biggest problem facing the healthy sexual relationships of modern couples?

We are not taught how to communicate, how to work at a relationship, how to make love and have awesome sex!

However, the number one issue would be stress. It can suppress your sexual desire and it can really mess with the individual and the couple and sadly the issues that develop during those times can also impede on how they regain their old sexual spark.

Have you noticed a rise in casual sex as people hold off longer before getting married?

Perhaps we are talking about it more openly as doing it outside of marriage is more the norm and more acceptable. Also linking in or hooking up with people the way you can do on sites like RedHotPie makes it very easy to find like-minded people where you can be honest about your desires and your intentions.

Some people might be holding off on getting married, some people are still married and playing, some are playing as a couple and some people have just come out of a marriage, so I believe that the people playing out there come from all walks of life which makes the sexual landscape way more interesting and intriguing.

How about your own experiences? Are your potential suitors a bit intimidated by the thought of dating a sex therapist?

Hell yes. I have to point out to them that my job is to talk sex, not have sex; that I’m as normal as the next person with my own sexual and relationship history, but I’m not really sure if they are actually listening to me or if they are just waiting for me to shut up!

Do you have any trouble following your own advice?

(Laughs) let’s put it this way. When I am with someone I am in a relationship with them, I am not in therapy with them so I do have had to hold my tongue sometimes. But not for long cause it flops out eventually.
