You have heard of the popular saying: ‘ Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus ’ a metaphor that has become part of the popular culture to describe the differences between men and women.

Yes, men and women are very different and face problems when trying to get along.

We are different in how we do things, think, react and in how we experience life and sex. Almost in all aspects men and women differ, but despite all the differences we need each other.

If we recognise that we are different, embrace, respect it and ultimately support each other, there are lessons we can teach each other. Our differences enrich our lives and yes sometimes ticks us off, but imagine if we were all the same —BORING.

We should be glad these differences exist. As is often said, opposites attract, and it’s this which creates the magic between us.

Bright Side has sketched a funny comic about the hilarious differences between men and women.

Some of the things drawn in the comic graphic you’ll identify with straight away and others not so much.

THERE’S a famous scene in 90s teen movie American Pie where a teenage boy goes searching for a secret book containing detailed instructions on how to give his girlfriend an orgasm.

That movie was more than 15 years ago, but we don’t seem to have progressed very far in knowing what women want. Many boys learn about sex from clueless or bragging friends, and through free internet porn, which is usually entirely focused on male pleasure.

Meanwhile, heterosexual girls have detailed chats about sex with friends, peruse the ubiquitous ‘How to please your man’ articles in women’s magazines and read erotic fiction, or soft-porn chick-lit.

That doesn’t mean women are always experts on their own bodies either, with society discouraging women from being open about their sexual desires. That’s why it was significant to see men’s magazine GQthis week heap praise on a website that publishes anonymous essays by women on how to make them orgasm. “We wanted to start a dialogue about how women achieve sexual pleasure; something that is often ignored, devalued, or misunderstood,” reads the Tumblr page, which currently features 72 fascinating posts. “Here is our look into the spectrum of desire.”

It’s an eye-opening set of opinions, preferences, fears and fantasies, with some giving practical advice (“I hate that thing when a tongue gets all hard and pointy”) and others recounting anecdotes about when they did and didn’t reach climax (“You got visibly bored, which made me tense in exactly the wrong way”).

The prompt for the site’s contributors is this: “Imagine you could give this essay to a past or future sexual partner, free of judgment or repercussion. What would you want them to know?”

It’s what we should be saying in real life, but it isn’t happening.

FAKING IT

Around one in five women are affected by anorgasmia, or inability to orgasm, according to the Mayo Clinic, and one in 10 have never climaxed at all. It doesn’t always mean they can’t climax, in many cases, something isn’t right.

In another enduring scene from a classic movie, When Harry Met Sally, Sally (Meg Ryan) demonstrates to a shocked Harry (Billy Crystal) just how easy it is to fake it.

As many as 26 per cent of women regularly fake orgasms, and almost 70 per cent of women who have had sex have done it at some point in their lives, a University of Kansas study revealed. That’s not great news for men and women, and it’s only making the problem worse.

So why do we do it?

NOT TURNED ON

For women more than men, sex generally involves the brain as well as body. That means women need to be in the right headspace. Psychological barriers can include thinking too much about what a partner wants, worrying about what they look like or feeling pressured to have sex or an orgasm.

In a UK study by Gayle Brewer from the University of Central Lancashire and Colin Hendrie of the University of Leeds, the researcher found that around 80 per cent of women consciously made noises during sex to “boost their partner’s self-esteem” and speed up their partner’s climax “to relieve discomfort/pain, boredom, and fatigue … as well as because of time limitations.”

Almost 70 per cent said they would stay with an otherwise satisfactory partner, even if they never reached orgasm with them.

“When a woman has low sexual desire or libido, they are really sexual neutral,” Desiree Spierings, director at Sexual Health Australia, told news.com.au. “It is just not something in the forefront of their minds.”

She said that while spontaneous desire for sex can wane in longer-term relationships, we have something called ‘response desire’, which kicks in after we begin an intimate encounter.

“A woman may not feel like having actual sex, however, once she starts to participate in something intimate like kissing, hugging or maybe getting or receiving a sensual massage, they may get aroused and then their response desire kicks in, and they do feel like taking it further.”

PLEASING A PARTNER

Many women are making the right noises or acting like they are enjoying something when they aren’t. This is obviously problematic, as it means the same mistakes are being repeated over and over.

“When we look at the messages, or even porn, it is very much focused on male pleasure,” said Desiree. “It can raise false expectations around what sex looks like or is. Sex is very much a learned behaviour and if we learn to be sexual through watching porn, we can have some issues when it comes to the actual sexual performance in the bedroom.”

While porn can be an asset to a healthy sex life both alone and in company, much of what’s out there isn’t great for the women involved (who wear expressions of forced sexiness or even pain), or those watching.

Young men and women are expecting sex to look like it does in videos that rarely show female pleasure. There were protests in the UK recently when censors tried to ban primarily acts associated with female enjoyment from porn videos.

Porn can also raise inadequacy issues, around weight, breast or penis size and sexual performance. The Australiasian Institute of Sexual Health Medicine revealed that 80 per cent of Australian women “believe that they are too fat to make love”.

At its worst, excessive watching of porn can become an addiction or compulsion, leading to an inability to enjoy real-life sex or a need to be more extreme or even violent. The Australian Study of Health and Relationships found last year that 22 per cent of women had been forced or frightened into doing something sexual they did not want do do.

DOING IT WRONG

Here’s perhaps the most important point many men don’t understand: most women don’t consistently orgasm with vaginal penetration alone. “Men are very performance-focused today and do believe it is important to pleasure a woman,” said Desiree. “This can also cause a few issues with performance anxiety though.”

As a sex therapist, she encourages both partners to recognise that sex is not all about intercourse, but about foreplay too, in and out of the bedroom. She suggests flirting, sexting, trying new things and making time specifically for sex.

Some women don’t understand their bodies either. “Sometimes women feel inhibited, due to their upbringing for example,” said Desiree. “They do not feel open about what they like or do not like.

“Your body belongs first of all to you … through masturbation, you can learn what it is that you like or do not like and how your body respond to this stimulation. It can help you to feel more comfortable with yourself as a sexual being, which in itself can be freeing in the bedroom.”

The Australian Study of Health and Relationships found that only 42 per cent of women aged 16 to 69 said they had masturbated in the past year, compared with 72 per cent of men. Some attribute this to a lack of sex education or society frowning on women who openly express their sexuality through their clothes, behaviour or sex life. Just look at the issues with slut-shaming or the recent horror at a young woman’s choice of a sexual song lyric as her Tinder profile.

HOW WE TALK ABOUT IT

Often we only hear about sex and sexuality in problematic contexts: STIs, disorders, fertility, sexual abuse, addictions, cheating and deviant behaviour. But medicalising sex, or commercialising it in advertising and the media, means the conversation initiated by the Tumblr on the female orgasm is never had.

Recent discussion of a “female viagra” was met with contempt from many commentators, because it ignores the fact that a woman’s difficulty with arousal is often not simply be mechanical.

Sex can be an expression of love or emotion, or about being playful and having fun. Today, more women are comfortable talking about sex, asking for what they want and having multiple partners than in previous generations. But as we’ve seen here, there’s still plenty of progress to be made.

Lads… are you sick of hiding your face as you scurry though the lavender scented aisles of Myers and the sort, desperately wanting a skin moisturiser or god forbid some hair products? Do you dream of a sanctuary, free from the frills and pink colour schemes, a space in which you can kick back and treat your body to a few simple comforts? Maybe a shave and a pore mask, maybe some tightening lotion for those crows feet, all with a beer in your hand and the game on the telly.

Well the call for this Narnia-like wonderland has been answered. Men’s grooming is a boom industry and Australia is riding the wave hard. Men everywhere are starting to maintain some of the upkeep the women folk have been practicing for years… and both sides of the fence are loving it.

Grey hairs are disappearing, stubble is seemingly more manicured and the monobrow, well we’ve almost beat that out of existence. Wonderful salons are popping up around the country catering to the male need and the female want.

We took some time out with Leycester Corey of Guys Grooming in Perth to ask him what this new market is all about.

So men’s grooming… give us the over view, what’s it involve?

Men’s Grooming is one of the fast growing industries at the moment due to the change in perception on how men should present themselves. Men are now going beyond brushing their teeth and washing their hair to present themselves successfully for both business and the fairer sex. Men’s Grooming incorporates the whole body from head to toe and everything in between. This includes well known treatments such as hair styling and colouring (especially for Grey) as well as shaving and trimming the beard areas. Men’s Grooming also includes treatments that are relatively new to the average man such as massages, facials, Hand and foot detailing, tanning and waxing.

And what are the most popular treatments for men?

Guys Grooming has had interest in all treatments but the most popular have been waxing and hair colouring. The modern man does not have to be hair free, but a well groomed approach to body hair in all areas is now very important to men wanting to present themselves successfully on that first date or that Board meeting. Men should always have two eyebrows, not one and hair does not need to be seen poking out of noses, ears or shirt collars. Guys are very conscious of looking their best and are regularly keeping the grey either away or at a reduced level to feel confident.

And what sort of guys are you seeing in the salon?

We have guys from just about every area, age and profession. We were blown away with the cross section on Men who care about their grooming needs. From Solicitors and CEO’s to Brickies and guys in the mines, we have them all as regulars. We have the casual surfers and the Professional Sportsmen. Basically, if you use your body, you need to maintain it. The teenagers focus on their looks just as much as the retirees like to feel relaxed. Wives book in their husbands and office workers refer their mates. We have yet to find a demographic that has not come back to Guys Grooming.

Any celeb client names you can drop?

We would love to drop a few names but the great thing about Guys Grooming is that we provide a relaxed atmosphere where guys can feel confident that they won’t be bothered, so advertising who comes here would go against that principle. We can say that we do have some of the guys from the Eagles, Dockers and Glory as well as Radio and TV personalities as regulars and have been known to groom some of the rock bands when they come to town.

Why has men’s grooming become so popular over the last few years?

Men’s Grooming has evolved so fast in recent years because of the lack of focus in salons on Men and the role models that are constantly in front of us. Ten years ago, Beckham stood out as a very well groomed guy, now you see guys dressed and groomed just as well as him every day. Women have been enjoying the benefits of regular treatments for years but the males had to be content with fitting in to an environment built around the thriving female business. Sales of men’s grooming products reached A$374 million in Australia last year, yet men have had to wait last in line and listen to Enya in pretty pink salons if they want a treatment. We have seen a huge demand for male grooming venues (not salons) that provide a comfortable masculine environment for treatments and retail in Australia.

What will differ between a guy’s treatment and the traditional treatments for women in salons?

A guy’s treatment will differ from a woman’s treatment because they have a different focus. Men want simpler options and need to maintain a regular high level of grooming rather than significantly change the image as beauty treatments tend to do. Men want the ladies to notice that they look younger and feel more confident but do not necessarily need them to know why. A great example is Hand Detailing as opposed to a Manicure. If you detail your car, you tidy, clean and protect it, but you do not change the colour of the paint. A hand detail follows the same logic, all men need to know is that the hand or car looks and feels great without creating unwanted attention.

And what about the salon environment itself?

This is a major factor that differentiates the female and unisex salons from Male Grooming venues. The male clients have to feel comfortable before they can relax and enjoy the experience. Guys Grooming prides itself in NOT having Waterfalls, pink decor, women’s magazines and all the other female comfort items that define the typical salon. Men’s grooming venues need to cater specifically to guys wants and needs while staying professional and modern. We have especially focused on the things that matter to men, like magazines and Foxtel channels on Business, Sports and Men’s Fashion.

And what’s behind it all? What are guys really wanting from a grooming experience?

In a Word, Confidence. They want to walk out feeling better looking, cleaner, fresher, sharper and more relaxed than when they walked in. Who does not want to increase their chances for a successful boardroom presentation or that cute girl in accounts? We provide the services that make them feel better about who they are and how they present themselves. Your chances for success go up dramatically when you don’t have to worry about nose hairs in night clubs and mono brows in the meetings.

So does it really work? Do you hear success stories from return clients?

It sure does work and there are some relationships out that we would like to think that we helped start. We have a client who comes in before every big presentation for a hairstyle, massage or facial to give him that confident edge. A great indication is the amount of guys that return to us regularly to maintain their new grooming regime, especially before the Friday drinks and weekend parties. It is also great to get emails from the Wives and Girlfriends thanking us for grooming their man.

So what does every man think apart from sex? Apparently nothing, claims British author who has written a book on it.

Quite fittingly, the book has just a cover and 200 blank pages inside.

Sheridan Simove’s What Every Man Thinks About Apart From Sex has become a surprise bestseller on Amazon.com.

The book has hit number 744 on the Amazon list, ahead of Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code (number 2,910) and JK Rowling’s Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix (2,406).

It is also picking up as a novelty gift among amused uni students in the UK who are flocking to grab a copy of the $7.95 paperback .

A student from Nottingham University says she picked up the copy for her friend.

“I bought a copy for my mate as a joke and he started using it as a note pad for lectures. Now everyone seems to have one. It’s started a real craze on campus”.

The book’s ‘author’ says he never expected his work to become a bestseller.

“When the book was published I never imagined in my wildest dreams that I would outsell Harry Potter. But Britain’s students seem to think my book is magic and who am I to argue?” Simove has been quoted as saying by news reports.

An Oxford University psychology graduate, 39-year-old Simove says his next research project is a PhD on the subject of what women think apart from sex.

“I hope to publish my findings in another decade,” he jokes.

An Indian man is suing the makers of Lynx deodorant after he failed to get a girlfriend despite using their products for seven years.

Vaibhav Bedi, 26, is demanding Unilever pay him $91,000 as compensation for the “depression and psychological damage” caused by a lack of any “Lynx effect”, the Daily Record reports.

Scantily-clad women throwing themselves at men wearing Lynx has long been a key feature of advertisements for the deodorant, which is marketed as Axe in India.

“The company cheated me because in its advertisements, it says women will be attracted to you if you use Axe … I used it for seven years but no girl came to me,” Mr Bedi said in his court petition.

A court in New Delhi has accepted half-used body washes, shampoos, anti-perspirants and hair gels for forensic testing.

Unilever has refused to comment on the lawsuit.

Mr Bedi’s lawyer Ram Jethmalani said it would be in Unilever’s best interests to settle out of court.

“There is no data to substantiate the supposition that unattractive and unintelligent men don’t attract women,” the Daily Record quoted him as saying.

“In fact, some of the best looking women have been known to marry and date absolutely ghoulish guys.”

Seth Rogen recently found time to sit down with American talk-show host, Jimmy Kimmel and reminisce about the time Megan Fox turned down his advances.

Both actors appeared on Kimmel’s show two years ago, and after Fox asked Rogen for some first-timer talk show tips, he saw a golden opportunity. Because “often the male guest takes it upon himself to plant a small kiss on the cheek of the female guest as they come out,” he tried to go for it.

What happened next is funny to read about, but funnier to watch: “I thought to myself, ‘When in my life will I ever get to kiss this woman? Now’s my chance! So I tried to do it, and to my memory, she physically stopped me from doing it and basically rejected me on television.”

Well, there are two police officers in the Northern Territory currently scoffing popcorn while watching Oprah after being stood down from active duty. You see the mistake they made was allowing photographs of their partying down with some scantily clad ladies at the annual Hookers Ball to get out. As far as we’re concerned the partying down bit’s ok, just don’t let the pics get back to your boss!

The pictures show the officers having a rollicking good time with some very fit young ladies who appear to be very friendly and respectful of the law, heck, one of them is even giving one of the officers a kiss – you can’t get any more respectful than that.

Ok, so maybe, getting flirty on the dance floor while holstering a loaded fire-arm wasn’t the best decision these young officers made but surely a slap on the wrist will be adequate punishment, in fact if the officers have significant others at home, we imagine that the hell they’re dealing with on that front is worse than anything the bosses can throw at them.

Really, when you think about it, can they be blamed at all? You see as most of the ladies can testify, a guy in uniform is a pretty handy aphrodisiac. Come on girls, how many of you have been out and about, happily minding your own business when WHACK, a hard bodied young fiery swaggers through your view – your heart skips, your knees bend and your knickers sigh.

So really, those poor policemen never stood a chance; they’ve arrived on the scene, which would have resembled Sodom in the good old days, only to be set upon by juiced up young vixens, high on life, drunk on lust and ripe for the plucking. And don’t kid yourself, if the cops had sent a female officer, the boys of the ball would have been throwing folding money at her quicker than you can say “how much for a private sweetheart?”

So is that it, are uniforms still that hot? Do they still up someone’s sexy by 50%? Drop us a comment below letting us know what you think. Have you ever been pulled by a uniform clad stranger?

It’s a fast world we live in; damn fast. Never has there been an age such as this, and never have humans had to adapt so quickly to their surroundings....

It’s a fast world we live in; damn fast. Never has there been an age such as this, and never have humans had to adapt so quickly to their surroundings. How are we growing, how are we coping and how are we relating? On what levels are we connecting with each other in a time where a smile has been replaced by emoticons and handshakes by text messaging?

Well there is a fair argument to say that men and women have never been further apart and as the ancient art of speak seems to become more and more fractured with each new blogging site, the act of engaging a potential partner in real life grows harder by the day.

So it’s time for some old school communication pointers, the big five for each sex. What women want to hear and just as importantly, what men want to hear…

What women want to hear

Compliments

Easy… you look incredible. Not hard right? No it’s not hard, so be sure to notice when your girl does something with their hair or wears those new shoes she bought. You don’t have to go over the top but you do have to be sincere, or at least sell sincere. Just a casual off the cuff compliment can lift your ladies spirits immeasurably which, of course, can only be good for you.

Be Jealous

Now we’re not suggesting you start glassing randoms who glance fleetingly in your ladies direction, but every now and then flex your muscles a touch. If your partner is chatting with another guy, be sure to ask who he was. Use humour as women will read through it anyway, so you can avoid the heavy vibes and still get the benefit. Your girl will appreciate that you care enough to be protective of her and your relationship.

Enquire

They say women want good listeners but if you’re one of those A+ kinda cats who have to go for gold then here’s the next level. Not only should you listen but follow it up with a few questions… “Really, your boss said that? So what did you do?” You’re most likely going to get the whole story anyway so why not play a part in its telling and connect with your lady; it will make her day and your night.

Long term

You don’t have to hit the mortgage broker circuit just yet but it doesn’t hurt to let your partner know that you have semi-long term intentions for the relationship. Again, it’s not about marriage or kids but simple ideas; things like a concert coming up in a few months you could both attend or a holiday together next year, can give your girl a feeling of security which will lead to a more relaxed and giving partner… and who doesn’t like a giving partner?

The Effect she has on you

This is the cunning second cousin of the compliment, it’s like saying she’s pretty but taking it a couple of steps further by telling her what that does to you. A woman will never feel more desired than when her man says how crazy hot she makes him. A few lines like “I just about explode looking at you” or “I couldn’t get those legs out of my mind all day” will remind her of the sexy power she has and most likely encourage her to wield it generously.

For Men

Compliments

Yes, not many men will admit to it but they are compliment hounds lust like the girls. Telling your man how sexy his hair is or how much you like the new shirt he bought will put a little spring in his step. You can always man it up some saying how much you like the new spoiler kit on the Commodore but the fact that you’re trying is the main thing.

Help me

“Here let me help you with that little lady”… never will a man have his chest sprouted further out than when mumbling those words. Think about it, three million years back men could just club a mountain lion and feel good about their place in the world, however thanks to microwave dinners and mace, the traditional male duties of providing for and protecting have been made somewhat redundant. So every now and then, throw him a jar with a stubborn lid or ask for something from the very high shelf. He’ll moan about it but inside he’ll be rainbows and puppies.

I’m impressed

Sure, men can be unfocussed buffoons who won’t notice a hair change short of a buzz cut, but sometimes it will be worth rising above the inequality to pay some attention to changes in their world. If your man’s been hitting the gym, mention it – “You’re arms look bigger hey”. Or if he has a crack in the kitchen don’t afraid to praise his cheese on toast abilities… don’t do it and you’ll be cutting your own Kraft from now on.

I want you

As we’ve established, men like compliments too and kind words don’t come any hotter than “I want you”. Any guy will heat up when told the female of the species is aroused by his mere existence and he’ll do just about anything to realise the potential of that remark. Don’t be afraid to play it cheeky; so you’re in the hair care aisle at Woolies, tell him that the way he’s fondling that Pantene bottle has your heart racing. Watch how task orientated he’ll be for the next twenty minutes.

Dirty Talk

Ok girls, this is pretty much the holy grail, the old saying goes men want a cook in the kitchen, a maid in the living room and a whore in the bedroom; well I’ve got some welcome news for you, you only have to sound like a whore… unless you’re that way inclined of course. A few carefully chosen and passionately delivered blue streaks can have a man bouncing of walls igniting all he touches. There is nothing hotter than a nice girl turned bad, even if it’s only for a few minutes, so don’t be afraid to let loose the hellish demons of profanity, the ride you receive will be more than worth it.

In the olden days, society’s law was strict. Women would only marry men older than themselves. Today, the line of age is much more blurred. PLUS we don’t have to marry guys any more! It has become more acceptable to find the kind of lover you need at the particular life stage you are at. Due to the high divorce rate in contemporary society, there are a large number of divorcees and broken families, and this is creeping into the norm for many people’s lives. So it makes sense that the requirements for the type of lovers we seek are also becoming more flexible.

For a start, a lot of women are now looking for a ‘booty call’, once purely the domain of men. But we are asserting ourselves, and looking out for number one for a change. We have realized that if we don’t want all the crap that comes with looking after a man and his ego, we’re happy to just get a bit on the side. It all started a few years ago, when glamour women of New York started dating younger guys, nicknamed ‘toy boys’. Men have always gotten the ‘tick of approval’ when it comes to dating gorgeous younger women, and it’s about time the tables turned. The growing acceptance of older women dating younger men may have something to do with the rising status of women in today’s society.

Many women are now completely independent of men, and so we are slowly starting to advance on men’s terrain. For years it has been more socially acceptable for older men to hook up with younger women but not vice versa. Well it seems things are finally starting to change with the improvement in gender equality. So women are realizing that they don’t need men that are older, have more life experience and are more financially stable, like they traditionally did. If a woman has all these attributes herself, well, what does she need a man for? That’s where the purity of love comes in, regardless of what a man earns or where he’s at in life. You could learn to love in the simplest form, without unnecessary complications.

This is where women have learnt to fall in love with the toy boys, and things that used to matter, such as financial status of the men, have either taken a back seat or been thrown out of the car altogether. Celebrity couples such as Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, Madonna and Guy Ritchie, and Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher have all paved the way for the acceptance of younger male lovers. These kinds of relationships simply weren’t feasible in the past, as women needed the men to earn the bread and help them move out of the family home. Therefore it simply wasn’t practical to be with a younger man as they couldn’t provide for the needs of their women.

Thankfully nowadays women are earning money and respect in their own right and should be rewarded accordingly! Haven’t women always looked after the men anyway?? It would be very liberating to break down the walls of societal condemnation and accept the love of a young soul. So the next time you are confronted with a situation where you are approached by a younger man, take the plunge and you may find you are pleasantly surprised. After all, it opens up a whole new world of possibilities not limited by parameters such as age.
