Halloween has been around forever, literally!

HALLOWEEN has its roots in a pagan festival of the dead (Samhain).
Celebrations were called for in order to pay respect and also ward off vengeful souls. A mass festivity was put in place that became a lot of fun, bonfires were lit and scary, spooky costumes were worn to ward off roaming ghosts.

In the 18th century, Pope Gregory III, claimed November 1 as a time to honour all saints and martyrs; the holiday, All Saints’ Day, and in-cooperated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before known as All Hallow’Eve was later abbreviated to HALLOWEEN, meaning Holy.

Over time, Halloween evolved into what we know today. Much in the same manner as Pope Gregory III, Americans, as a consumer society, converted this ancient holiday into something profitable.

It’s true to say that the manner in which we celebrate Halloween today was borrowed from American TV shows, movies and pop-culture, but in essence this holiday has been celebrated worldwide for centuries.

The religious and spiritual roots of the holiday are preserved, in some form, in various countries around the world.

In Mexico and Spain, Halloween is known as ‘Los Dias de los Muertos’ (the day of the dead) a day they honour their loved departed by remembering them through a recount of their past lives.

In Sweden,” Alla Helgons dag” is celebrated between October 31 and November 6 with choirs and the lighting of candles at the graves of loved ones.

The Buddhists light up large paper boats, named ‘boats of law’, and symbolically free the souls who died by accident or were never buried to help them ascend to heaven by lightening fires.

More people in more countries than ever before celebrate Halloween today in the same manner as the Americans. Why is it so popular? There’s a simple reason: it is fun! Halloween has become a global tradition. Just like Christmas, which has become more about Santa Claus and presents over hundred of years of mixing and matching beliefs and traditions, Halloween has become a mash of traditions put all in one. How we choose to celebrate any holiday is really up to us; we could keep true to its origins or follow someone else’s interpretation or better yet get our own going!

Celebrate Halloween in your bedroom:

This year let’s throw all biases out of the window and have fun. Why not give it a go and celebrate it our own way? Australians are known around the world to be the life of the party. In the good Aussie spirit, let’s take this opportunity and celebrate.

It would be a shame anyway to pass on an occasion built around pranks, imagination and dress-ups. It could be a lot of fun.

There are many other ways to celebrate Halloween beyond the trick-or-treating.
One option is to host parties or have a private party in your own bedroom.

Suitably attired in our newly acquired fetish finery we arrived at London Bridge superclub SE-One as it opened its doors at 10pm to a crowd keen to get their fetish groove on. High Street fashion was quickly discarded for cheeky rubber frocks and tighter-than-tight leather pants. This was the night when corporate lawyers transformed magically into latex clad drag queens with a mere wave of a talcum powder bottle.

A strict dress code of rubber, pvc, leather guaranteed that this ball would not be a taffeta and bow-tie affair. Indeed, punters were well advised that lack of appropriate dress would result in a sorry ride back home on the Tube. It certainly gave new meaning to the adage of ‘no rubber, no entry’.

Those who passed the fetish fashionistas’ scrutiny gained access to the inner sanctum where a jazz band welcomed guests in. A quick circumnavigation of the venue revealed many areas playing host to the various acts and attractions that made up the Rubber Ball’s schedule of festivities. Most notably, the Temple of Sin boasted a spectacular repertoire of acts (including acrobatics, burlesque, dance theatre, BDSM and comedy) which took centre stage throughout the night.

Other areas of the venue catered to the various whims of patrons. The F Club provided an exclusive play space for couples who wished to get to know each other more intimately. Sweet Torment’s Dungeon also proved popular with those keen to try their high quality BDSM equipment. The less game were welcome to watch from behind the barriers.

Finally, a ball just wouldn’t be complete without a dance floor and no one was disappointed with the Dance Space where a formidable line-up of local DJs held court. A heady blend of house, trance and electro got the crowd moving well into the wee small hours.

Around 1500 both local and international party goers dressed in all manner of kinky couture made the 08 Rubber Ball a spectacular spectacle of colour and flesh and a nonstop night of intrigue.

Skin Two owner Tim Woodward and his event organizing partner Max W certainly made RHP very welcome with some downright indulgent Rubber Ball hospitality. We also got the opportunity to meet many RHP UK members and made a few new very sexy and very naughty friends throughout the night.

Verdict? The Rubber Ball is simply unmissable, regardless of your level of interest in the fetish world. It’s simply a veritable feast for the eyes and senses. Nothing is OTT at the Rubber Ball and the uninitiated will soon discover that their novice foray into alternative dress-ups is decidedly mainstream.

Just as well you’ve got another year to up the costume ante!
