A woman, known as Alex, tweeted the airline yesterday complaining that her flight to Portland was delayed and demanded compensation after her holiday was off to a bad start.

The airline apologised, asking her to provide feedback to its customer service team via a link — which was to the graphic image.

But the airline didn’t stop there.

The same link was sent to another customer, Elle Rafter, after she also complained about her late flight to Portland.

The tweet was up for more than 20 minutes, which was more than enough time for it to be shared by hundreds of people.

The Twittersphere reacted with shock and amusement with some people questioning how it came to happen at all.

US Airways today apologised for the error and said its team was continuing to investigate the incident.

The airline’s spokesman Matt Miller told USA Today that the image was first tweeted at @USAirways from an individual’s Twitter handle.

The airline team then accidentally included the image in a response to another customer via Twitter.

“Our investigation has determined that the image was initially posted to our Twitter feed by another user. We captured the tweet to flag it as inappropriate. Unfortunately the image was inadvertently included in a response to a customer,” Mr Miller said.
