AN EXTREMELY drunk Australian has caused a stir by climbing into bed naked with sleeping strangers in a New Zealand resort town.
The 29-year-old, who is living in Queenstown over the winter, had been “picked up” by a woman during a Friday night out, but rather than sleep the whole night in her hotel room he roamed to another one down the hallway.
“He got up at some stage in the night and wandered butt-naked around the hotel until he found a new bed to snuggle up in,” said Sergeant Steve Watt, of Queenstown police.
“I’m not sure what the trouble was with the other bed, but you can imagine the couple’s surprise when they awoke to find a nude man trying to cosy up with them.”
The intruder, whose name has not been revealed, slept soundly while the woman hid in the bathroom and her husband phoned the concierge.
“We got called at 7am on Saturday, by which time the hotel, being as generous as they were, had given the gentleman a robe and taken him down to their front counter,” Watt said.
“Unfortunately, he had no idea who the woman was that he’d gone home with, or what room she was staying in, so he had no clothes and no wallet and had to take a ride home with us still in his robe.”
The man, who was working on the mountain, was not charged.
“It was far too funny for that,” Watt said.
“While the people that he crashed with were obviously highly surprised, thankfully they saw the lighter side of it as well and didn’t wish to press any charges and nor did the hotel.”
The officer said he was used to Australians “getting up to mischief” in the tourist town, “but this is one of the funniest, most entertaining debacles I’ve had to deal with in a very long time”.
