Will Smith, Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman… good so far yes? Well throw them into a part-superhero – part self discovery Hollywood blockbuster and the results… well they kinda vary…

Perhaps Smith’s best crack at franchise success to date, Hancock finds a dishevelled Smith at odds with the public and the powers he has mysteriously inherited from someone or something. The man is an out and out super-hero with the flying and the whale throwing, but the demands of the public to serve the greater good in a fitting fashion only drive the character further from the man he once was.

A chance meeting with public relations guru Ray Embery (Bateman) triggers this film’s mood swing as Hancock begins his self-discovery quest in an attempt to repair his broken public persona, and find peace within himself.

Director Peter Berg then brings Theron into the game setting up a somewhat predictable twist and fleshing out the whole backstory to Hancock’s current predicament.

This works as a turn off for two hours, Hollywood production but ultimately there’s too much Good Will Hunting and not enough Ironman, had Berg simply delved into the comedy/action possibilities of a Hancock’s truly floored hero, there could have been a genuine hit on the cards but trying to over cook a simply idea has left the film a little stranded in between the two films it actually wants to be.
